A federal judge in the United States has issued a temporary restraining order preventing Trump administration officials from threatening state and local election workers with investigations and criminal prosecution over their handling of election procedures.

The decision, issued by the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Friday, October 30, comes just days before the country's November 3 midterm elections.

The case involves legal challenges brought by civil rights and labour organisations against federal government agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.

According to the court proceedings, the plaintiffs argued that federal officials had used threats of criminal investigations to pressure election administrators into following federal demands concerning voter eligibility and ballot processing.

Court Raises Concerns Over Federal Authority

The judge's order temporarily restricts federal officials from using the threatened investigations and prosecutions against election workers who are performing their responsibilities under applicable election laws.

The court raised concerns about potential interference with state and local election administration, particularly regarding the constitutional authority of states to manage important aspects of their elections.

The temporary restraining order is scheduled to remain in effect for 14 days, while the legal dispute continues.

Dispute Over Election Administration

The legal conflict comes amid wider disagreements between the federal administration and several state authorities over voter eligibility, election records and the handling of ballots.

California officials have challenged federal demands relating to voter information and election materials. Federal authorities have argued that their actions are intended to address concerns about election integrity.

However, state officials and voting-rights advocates have raised concerns about the potential consequences for eligible voters and the independence of election administration.
