Highlighting the growing investment required to build large-scale AI computing infrastructure. According to Reuters reporting published on October 26, the agreement involves an affiliate of Apollo Global Management financing equipment that will be leased to SpaceX. The arrangement is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, with leases beginning in the first half of 2027 as the equipment arrives.

The investment comes as SpaceX expands beyond rocket launches and satellite internet services into artificial intelligence computing. The company is seeking to capitalize on growing demand for computing power as technology businesses compete to develop and operate increasingly advanced AI systems.

Musk has previously said that SpaceX secured $40 billion in financing for graphics processing units, or GPUs, primarily intended for delivery during the first half of 2027.

The scale of the investment also reflects the financial challenges facing companies building AI infrastructure. Advanced processors, data centers, electricity and supporting hardware require substantial capital, while businesses must generate sufficient revenue to justify their spending.

SpaceX's growing involvement in AI could reshape its business as it continues developing its space exploration and satellite communications operations.

The financing arrangement highlights Musk's broader strategy of combining space technology, satellite connectivity and artificial intelligence. However, the long-term returns will depend on the company's ability to deploy the equipment, attract customers and generate sustainable revenue from its expanding computing operations.
