South Korea is strengthening its position as one of Asia's leading destinations for international investment, supported by its advanced manufacturing capabilities, semiconductor industry and rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem.

The country has become increasingly important to global technology supply chains, particularly in semiconductor production, electronic components, batteries, advanced materials and industrial automation.

Foreign companies are also showing growing interest in South Korea's technological infrastructure as demand for high-performance computing, AI data centres and advanced electronics continues to expand.

Foreign Investment Reaches New Highs

According to South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, foreign direct investment notifications reached $22.9 billion during the first three quarters of 2026, an increase of 10.8% compared with the same period in 2025.

More importantly, actual foreign investment inflows increased by 30.6% to $14.9 billion, marking the highest January-to-September figure on record.

Investment notifications in information and communications, including data centres, increased by 35.8% to $2.4 billion.

The financial and insurance sector also recorded significant investment activity, with notifications reaching $5.4 billion.

These developments indicate that international investors are expanding their interest beyond traditional manufacturing into financial technology, digital infrastructure and advanced services.

Semiconductors Remain a Strategic Priority

South Korea's semiconductor industry continues to play a central role in its investment strategy.

Companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are important participants in global memory chip production and advanced semiconductor technologies.

The country's investment ecosystem also includes suppliers of semiconductor materials, manufacturing equipment and specialised industrial components.

Recent international investment announcements further demonstrate this momentum. In September 2026, South Korea announced that four US companies planned a combined $2 billion investment in semiconductor, advanced materials and energy projects.

The proposed investments include semiconductor gas facilities, chipmaking equipment production, advanced materials and renewable energy infrastructure.

Artificial Intelligence and Clean Energy Create New Opportunities

The expansion of AI technologies is increasing demand for data centres, high-performance computing infrastructure and specialised electronic components.

South Korea is positioning itself to benefit from these developments through investments in digital infrastructure and advanced industrial technologies.

Clean energy is another growing investment area. Offshore wind projects and renewable electricity infrastructure are increasingly important as manufacturers seek reliable energy supplies for large-scale industrial operations.

Investment Outlook

South Korea's long-term investment prospects will depend on maintaining technological competitiveness, strengthening international supply chains and addressing challenges involving energy costs, demographic changes and global trade uncertainty.

Competition from the United States, China, Japan and Taiwan will also influence the country's ability to attract additional investment.

Nevertheless, its established industrialbase, advanced technology companies and growing AI ecosystem continue to make South Korea an important destination for international investors.
