Shutterstock Founder Returns as CEO as Company Reassesses Its Future in the AI Era
Former U.S. President Joe Biden is facing a worsening health situation after his son Hunter Biden said the cancer has spread to his bones and described the disease as "very painful" and "very debilitating."

The company announced on October 29 that Oringer's appointment became effective October 28. He will also continue serving as chairman of the board. Hichame Assi, previously chief executive of Envato, has been appointed president and chief operating officer.
Founder takes back leadership
Oringer founded Shutterstock in 2003 and previously served as its CEO until 2020. His return marks a significant leadership change for the company, which has expanded beyond traditional stock photography into creative services, digital content and generative AI solutions.
In his new role, Oringer will concentrate on long-term corporate strategy, investments and future business opportunities. Assi will oversee daily operations, business performance and organisational execution.
The company also acknowledged Rik Powell, who served as interim CEO during the leadership transition.
Artificial intelligence reshapes the creative industry
The leadership change comes as generative AI transforms how businesses produce, purchase and distribute digital content.
AI-powered image generation and editing tools are creating new competition for traditional stock-image providers. At the same time, businesses increasingly require licensed creative assets, specialised datasets and services that support AI development.
Oringer said the rapid development of AI presents opportunities for Shutterstock to build on its existing business and deliver additional value to customers and contributors.
Company reviews its strategic direction
Shutterstock also announced that it would not hold its previously scheduled third-quarter 2026 earnings conference call on November 5 while it evaluates its strategic direction and priorities.
The company said it intends to report its quarterly financial results in accordance with applicable reporting requirements and provide further updates when appropriate.
What comes next?
Oringer's return places the company's founder back in charge during a period of significant technological change. Shutterstock's next phase will involve balancing its established stock-content business with opportunities in AI, creative technology and digital licensing.
The company's upcoming financial disclosures and strategic updates are expected to provide further information about its priorities under the renewed leadership team.
