Art Basel Qatar 2027: 82 Galleries Bring the Global Art World to Doha

Former U.S. President Joe Biden is facing a worsening health situation after his son Hunter Biden said the cancer has spread to his bones and described the disease as "very painful" and "very debilitating."

Art Basel Qatar 2027 will bring 82 galleries from 37 countries and territories to Msheireb Downtown Doha for its second edition, running from 28 to 30 January 2027, with invitation-only preview days on 26 and 27 January. The fair will feature 80 solo artist presentations, mixing established international galleries with emerging voices from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The line-up is slightly smaller than the 87 galleries from 31 countries that took part in the inaugural fair in February 2026.

More than 30 galleries will take part for the first time, including Mumbai’s Jhaveri Contemporary, London’s Richard Saltoun Gallery and Hong Kong’s Hanart TZ Gallery. Returning names include Gagosian, David Zwirner, White Cube, Sprüth Magers and Nature Morte. Turnover has been high, however, as about 40% of last year’s galleries are not returning, among them Hauser & Wirth and Pace Gallery.

A Theme About What Connects Us

The 2027 edition explores the theme “between / بين”, developed by Iraqi artistic director Wassan Al-Khudhairi, the founding director of Doha’s Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, working with Art Basel’s Vincenzo de Bellis. She describes the theme as “a liminal space of possibility”, where different perspectives, histories and ideas meet and new ways of seeing emerge.

What does that mean for the fair itself? Around half of the artists come from the MENASA region, and more than a third of the participating galleries operate there. Presentations will take place across M7, the Doha Design District and selected public locations in Msheireb Downtown Doha.

Building Beyond the Fair

Art Basel is also launching Collectors Majlis, a year-round, invitation-only pilot for roughly 30 to 40 new and emerging collectors. It combines masterclasses, on-site engagement during the fair and a post-fair salon, with sessions led by Art Basel leadership and regional figures, including Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums. Art Basel says the programme is meant to strengthen the regional market between editions.

The initiative suggests that the fair’s ambitions extend beyond attracting visitors for a few days each year. The second edition will test whether Doha can become a lasting meeting point for artistic exchange between the region and the rest of the world, at a time when The Art Newspaper has also pointed to renewed regional security concerns.
